Culturally responsive practices are at the heart of building early learning spaces where every child, educator, and family feels seen, safe, and celebrated. For program leaders, this means actively shaping policies, practices, and environments that reflect and respect the identities and lived experiences of your community.
The Spark Guide was designed to support leaders like you through this process. Whether you’re just starting or looking to deepen your practice, the guide offers tools, stories, and training to help you lead with intention and equity.
“It’s about really thinking about how you create a welcoming space. It takes some of the leadership to say bring yourself to work, right? Whether it’s your lunch that might smell or look different, whether you’re wearing your cultural clothing. You know it’s OK to bring yourself to work and by the same token that leads by example for families to be who they are in that space.”
— Advisor, Spark Guide (pg. 70)
So, where do you begin? Here are some important first steps:
Explore the Guide
The guide is organized into five core strategies that can support your team’s culturally responsive journey. While all five strategies are relevant to leaders, the final strategy—Organizational Foundations—is especially important.
Use this section of the guide to:
- Create a culturally safe workforce and workplace
- Review and revise equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies
- Reflect on human resource practices through a cultural lens
- Shape professional development in a way that reflects your community’s diversity
Starting with foundational change sends a clear message: everyone belongs here—not just in words, but in action. Culturally responsive childcare can’t rely on one-off events or the passion of individual educators alone. It needs to be woven into the systems that shape hiring, onboarding, decision-making, and professional learning. When a program’s structures intentionally reflect equity, inclusion, and cultural safety, those values become part of how everyone shows up.

Ready to go deeper? The In-Depth Spark Guide Leadership Training is a chance to step back from the day-to-day and reflect on your leadership with a fresh perspective. This training was designed specifically for early learning and child care program leaders who are ready to deepen their commitment to culturally responsive practice and lead meaningful change in their programs.
Through this training, you’ll learn alongside other program leaders from across the province, gaining insights not only from the Spark Guide but also from the real-world experiences of your peers. Programs are also eligible for release time funding to cover staff time dedicated to this training.
The training follows a phased approach to support learning and application:
- Virtual Introductory Session
A 3-hour interactive session offered on multiple dates and times that introduces key concepts and helps participants begin thinking about culturally responsive leadership in their own context.
- In-Person Full-Day Training
A hands-on full-day session near your community or virtually that allows you to dive deeper into each of the Spark Guide strategies, engage in meaningful reflection, and develop action plans tailored to your program’s needs.
You’ll leave this training with practical tools, new perspectives, and a clear sense of culturally responsive childcare.

One of the most impactful things you can do is encourage your educators and staff to continue learning—together and individually. The Spark Guide team has created the following accessible, high-quality asynchronous training opportunities that educators can complete at their own pace and revisit as needed:
- Spark Guide Introductory Modules: A quick, self-paced introduction to the Spark Guide’s core ideas and practical strategies for culturally responsive care.
- Supporting Ethnocultural and Multilingual Families Video Series: Learn how to connect with diverse families, support multilingualism, and build strong, culturally respectful relationships.
These asynchronous resources are ideal for staff meetings, professional learning days, or individual development goals. You can integrate them into onboarding, mentorship, or reflective practice cycles. When educators have the opportunity to explore, reflect, and grow, the entire program benefits—children feel more understood, families feel more connected, and staff feel more confident and supported.
